Two amber altars for private devotion
Northeast German, probably Danzig, c. 1680
Amber, ivory, glass, wooden core
Height 51 cm
Both amber altars are worked fully in the round in the incrustation technique combining amber cabochons (partly adorned with intaglio on the back side) and ivory carvings of high quality. Comparable amber works are only to be seen in the Kunstkammer of castle Rosenborg in Copenhagen and in the Treasury of the Munich Residenz.
