The Kunstkammer that once belonged to Grand Duke Ferdinand of the Tyrol is one of the few Kunstkammer to have been preserved virtually as it was. Ferdinand II had it installed in Ambras Castle near Innsbruck, the place he chose as his residence. Giving a great deal of thought to the mounting and displaying of the objects, he had cases with coloured decoration specially made for this purpose. Whereas most early Kunstkammer have been dismantled or looted and their contents scattered throughout the world’s museums, the Ambras Castle Kunstkammer was spared this fate. It is probably the best known Kunstkammer. To drive past Ambras without getting out of your car is regarded by lovers of Kunstkammer and Wunderkammer as an unforgivable sacrilege.
